Our Curriculum

At Fern & Fox, we follow the lead of the child. Our days are designed to feel like a steady, gentle rhythm rather than a rigid schedule. We believe that children are capable helpers and curious explorers, ready to flourish.

 

 

The Layout of the Day

Each of our spaces allow children to follow their own instincts while still maintaintaining a structured day.

 

The Discovery Den:

A place for busy hands. Whether it’s digging through a sensory bin, building a bridge, or getting lost in a world of make-believe, this space is for deep play.

The Cozy Nook:

For the moments when a little fox needs a quiet pause. Soft pillows and a curated library offer a peaceful spot to rest or flip through a favorite story.

The Hearth:

Our dining and craft table is the heart of the home. Here, we don’t just eat or paint; we participate. Children help prep snacks, set the table, and dive into "process art" where the joy is in the making, not just the result.

Growing Together

Life at Fern and Fox is a team effort. We emphasize cooperative learning, where helping out is one of our favorite activities.

 

A Helping Hand:

We invite the children to be part of the rhythm of the house. Older children take pride in being mentors, showing the younger ones how to tidy a shelf or set up a new game.

Social Roots:

By working together on daily tasks, children learn empathy and the quiet confidence that comes from being a vital part of a team.

 




Find Your Wild Side

We believe childhood should be lived outdoors. Beyond our daily gardening and play, we take four seasonal adventures each year. These are our field trips to the beach, the zoo, the aquarium, or the farm—moments where we leave our four walls to see how big and wonderful the world really is. 

A place that feels like home.

Because we are a small-batch, home-based program, we have the flexibility to follow each child’s rhythm. Our home isn't just a building—it's the third teacher, designed to encourage independence in a safe, familiar space.

Our home is designed with little explorers in mind. Instead of rigid classroom rows, Fern + Fox uses learning stations woven gently throughout our space.
 
Our program in Lockport focuses on nurturing the whole child through:
 

 - Story & Language: Getting lost in tales and finding our own voices.

 - Early Math & Problem-Solving: Discovering the patterns and logic in the world around us.

 - Nature & Science Discovery: Observing the tiny wonders of the outdoors.

 - Creative Arts & Imaginative Play: Letting our hands and hearts lead the way.

 - Movement & Wellness: Celebrating what our growing bodies can do.

 - Mindfulness & Relaxation: Learning the quiet power of a deep breath and a calm moment.

 

During our learning blocks, the intention is guided, but the journey belongs to the child. One small fox might be busy counting acorns at the table, while another builds a towering wooden fortress across the room. Nearby, someone else may be curled into a quiet nook, tucked away with a favorite book.
Our goals are thoughtful and structured, but the experience is always personal.
